Not to mention the fact that I've been mulling plunking down the $200 or so for an authentic Majestic Yankees road jersey, only I wasn't entirely certain who I wanted to spend that much money on. Of course the answer's been in front of me the entire time.And so it went, as the Yankees defeated the Tigers 6-2 behind seven strong innings (and nine strikeouts) from the unflappably awesome CC Sabathia and a scoreless inning apiece from David Robertson and the aforelinked deity known as Mariano Rivera.
Things began somewhat bizarrely, as Austin Jackson lifted the first pitch of the game into the seats for only his second career home run, putting the Yankees in a 1-0 hole literally as quickly as possible. The Yankees were able to answer with two of their own in the bottom of the 1st against an exceptionally wild Justin Verlander. Verlander would settle down somewhat, but having thrown more than 60(!) pitches before the second inning ending you knew his night was going to end early.
Despite the high early pitch count, Verlander actually escaped relatively unscathed (3 ER over 5 IP), but the Yankees were able to add three more against Daniel Schlereth -- including a scorching Robinson Cano bomb -- and the game was basically all Yankees as Sabathia cruised along.
Curtis Granderson had another nice game, blasting a solo shot off his ex-teammate and picking up a walk, not to mention two fantastic plays in the field in the first. In the admittedly super-small six-game sample since Curtis retooled his mechanics with Kevin Long he's hitting .400/.478/.800 with two home runs. That'll play. Brett Gardner also got on base three times in the leadoff slot, and I'd love to see more of the team's second-best OBP guy setting the table.
The Yanks remain tied for first as Tampa Bay destroyed Texas and maintained their 5.5-game lead over Boston, who shutout their favorite whipping boys.
On a side note, I was at this one last night, and come the 8th inning my dad and I made our way from our section in the upper deck in left field down to the field level in right to watch from the concourse, which is our usual gameplan to beat a hasty escape to the 4. While watching from the concourse, I was jarred to hear the John Sterling/Suzyn Waldman broadcast being piped in, as I knew I'd always heard it while in the bathroom, but didn't remember also hearing it outside in the concourse while actually watching the game. However, several folks said the radio broadcast has indeed been piped into the concourse since day one. Maybe they pipe the radio feed into the field level concourse, but not in the upper deck? Anyway, if anyone can help clarify this I'd greatly appreciate it.
