I've already gone on record with my desire to play the Twins over the Tigers in the ALDS. Now Sam Borden points out that Justin Verlander is scheduled to pitch on Sunday, but would be scratched in the event that the Tigers can clinch the Central beforehand.
If Verlander is in fact pressed into duty on Sunday, this will all but assure that the Yankees will pick the longer ALDS schedule (which all signs point to them doing regardless), as Verlander wouldn't be ready until Game 2 next Friday. The thought of not having to face Verlander in Game 1 is all kinds of awesome.
Sam also mentions that if Detroit-- who owns a two-game lead on Minnesota heading into the weekend -- manages to lose two of three to the White Sox this weekend and the Twins sweep the Royals, the teams would be forced into a one-game playoff.
So not only would the Yankees' potential opponent have their work cut out for them in a sudden death 163rd game in Minnesota, but the game apparently wouldn’t even be played until Tuesday because the Vikings are on Monday Night Football.
Man, if I were a fan of either team I'd be furious that the tiebreaker is scheduled for the day before the ALDS because of a football game! Thank you, NFL!
