Some fun with numbers: 81 games at new Yankee Stadium later

Last night's game was the 10th that I attended this season, and brought my 2009 record to 5-5. Considering I started the season 0-4, I feel OK about finishing at .500, although I really wanted to secure a winning record after last night's game, and the Yankees blew it.

The Yankees wound up with walk-off wins in 26% of their home wins. Of my five wins, two were of the walk-off variety, which means I saw walk-offs in 40% of the victories I attended.

Given that the Yankees finished the season going 57-24 at home, it's pretty crazy that I attended more than 20% of those losses -- one of which was a rare extra-inning loss on May 6 to the Rays, another a tie game in which Mariano Rivera gave up the lead in the 9th inning a day later and last night's game in which the potential tying and winning runs were in scoring position. Crazy to think that the Yankees could have had three more walk-off wins this year.

Here's a list of the games I attended at Yankee Stadium in 2009:

Game Date Opponent Starters Outcome
12 4.18.09 Cleveland Wang v. Carmona L, 22-4
27 5.06.09 Tampa Bay Burnett v. Sonnanstine L, 4-3
28 5.07.09 Tampa Bay Pettitte v. Niemann L, 8-6
42 5.22.09 Philadelphia Burnett v. Myers L, 7-3
61 6.12.09 New York Mets Chamberlain v. Hernandez W, 9-8*
139 9.07.09 Tampa Bay Burnett v. Sonnanstine W, 11-1
144 9.13.09 Baltimore Sabathia v. Guthrie W, 13-3
147 9.16.09 Toronto Gaudin v. Tallet W, 5-4*
155 9.26.09 Boston Sabathia v. Matsuzaka W, 3-0
159 9.30.09 Kansas City Chamberlain v. Tejeda L, 4-3

*walkoff

I didn't even realize I'd seen Burnett v. Sonnanstine twice before compiling this list. Mercifully I avoided all of Sergio Mitre's outings, although unfortunately I never got to see my boy Hughes start. Something to look forward to in 2010, after we've finished hoisting that 27th World Championship banner.

  1. I only made it to 2 games. I watched a combined 6 hours of rain delay to only 5 1/2 hours of baseball. Because of that I think I've memorized the location of every concession stand in the building.

  2. And last year when you and I went we endured that one hour-plus rain delay only to watch them lose at the hands of lowly KC. Skip, apparently you are a bad luck charm when it comes to the weather and Yankee games.

  3. Put your .500 record aside and just be thrilled that you attend the Luis Castillo "drop" game...
